Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is taking steps to strengthen Hyderabad water infrastructure and improve drinking water supply across the city.

State Transport, BC Welfare and Hyderabad district in-charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar chaired a high-level review meeting at the HMWSSB headquarters in Khairatabad on Tuesday.

Minority Welfare Minister Mohammed Azharuddin, HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy, Director Sudarshan and Joint Managing Director Mayank Mittal attended the meeting.

Senior officials from different departments also participated in the review.

Officials discussed drinking water supply, tanker services, monsoon preparedness and sewage treatment plants.

They also reviewed ongoing infrastructure works and water conservation measures.

Senior officials gave a presentation on water supply systems, river protection measures and future infrastructure needs.

Addressing the media later, Ponnam Prabhakar said Hyderabad was currently receiving 650 MGD of drinking water supply.

He stated that the government was implementing Godavari Phase-II and Phase-III projects with an investment of Rs 7,000 crore.

Ponnam Prabhakar also said the government planned to take up Krishna Phase-IV and Phase-V projects in the coming years.

He added that authorities would also implement the Singur water pipeline project.

According to the minister, Hyderabad currently has 14.50 lakh tap connections, including 6.23 lakh free water connections.

He said the Water Board was resolving drinking water complaints promptly.

The minister stated that Hyderabad had nearly 6.14 lakh manholes across the city.

Officials were carrying out desilting and cleaning works ahead of the monsoon season, he added.

Ponnam Prabhakar said the government was taking precautionary measures to prevent waterlogging and drainage issues during heavy rains.

He also stated that nearly 95 percent of tanker bookings were being supplied within 24 hours during summer.

The minister urged citizens to construct rainwater harvesting pits to improve groundwater levels.

He warned that consumers repeatedly depending on tanker water without rainwater harvesting measures could face double tanker charges in future.

Ponnam Prabhakar said the government allocated Rs 11,900 crore for Water Board development and infrastructure works.

He also announced that authorities would soon fill vacant posts in the department.

The minister further warned that officials would remove illegal constructions over drainage lines.

He stated that authorities would assess water supply and infrastructure capacity before granting permissions for new high-rise buildings in Hyderabad.
