Hyderabad: Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar conducted a Monsoon preparedness review with GHMC officials, district authorities and representatives of various departments to assess measures aimed at preventing public inconvenience during the rainy season.

The Minister said the review was held in line with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s directions to ensure effective preparedness before the onset of heavy monsoon rains. He directed officials to complete desilting works in advance and implement a comprehensive action plan to prevent waterlogging, urban flooding and road inundation across the city.

Moreover, he instructed all departments to coordinate closely and respond quickly during emergencies that may arise during the monsoon season.

Ponnam Prabhakar stressed the importance of sanitation management and asked officials to maintain cleanliness across Hyderabad. In addition, he directed authorities to continuously monitor the functioning of Basti Dawakhanas as part of public health preparedness during the rainy season.

The Minister said the government was expanding drinking water resources to meet the needs of Hyderabad’s growing population. He noted that the city earlier depended mainly on Krishna and Godavari water supply phases.

Furthermore, he said the government was modernising the drainage network to improve stormwater flow during periods of intense rainfall.

Monsoon preparedness review stresses rainwater harvesting

The Minister made it clear that every new building in Hyderabad must install rainwater harvesting systems. He specifically called for the implementation of rainwater harvesting facilities in apartments and gated communities to improve groundwater recharge. According to him, the government will first create awareness among residents and later ensure compliance wherever necessary.

Ponnam Prabhakar also announced that authorities were preparing an action plan to plant 25 lakh saplings across Hyderabad’s 150 divisions. Consequently, the initiative aims to strengthen the city’s green cover and improve the urban environment.
