Hyderabad: HYDRAA has intensified Krishna Nagar flood mitigation efforts ahead of the monsoon and accelerated desilting works to reduce recurring flooding in the locality.

HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath inspected desilting operations in Krishna Nagar under the Jubilee Hills constituency on Saturday. Officials identified accumulated silt and blocked stormwater drains as the main causes of flooding during heavy rains.

The commissioner directed officials to speed up the works in coordination with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). He also asked contractors to remove obstacles that delay the clearance of decades-old silt deposits.

Officials said stormwater drains nearly 10 feet deep contained up to seven feet of silt. HYDRAA expects complete desilting to reduce flood risks significantly.

Ranganath instructed contractors to install iron grills at locations where workers removed slabs for desilting. He said the grills would improve public safety and prevent accidents.

The commissioner expressed dissatisfaction over delays in the project. He said authorities should have completed the works much earlier. Therefore, he directed officials to ensure visible progress before the rainy season.

Ranganath also said HYDRAA would pursue plans for a major stormwater drain carrying floodwater from the Venkatagiri area. He added that officials would seek expert advice before undertaking works near Metro pillars and major roads.

HYDRAA reviews Malkam Cheruvu flood management

The commissioner later inspected flood channels around Malkam Cheruvu near the Shaikpet-Gachibowli main road.

During the visit, he raised concerns about the sluice gate designed to regulate water levels in the lake. He observed that poor inlet and outlet systems had contributed to recurring flooding.

Ranganath directed officials to complete inlet desilting within a week. He also asked them to widen the outlet sluice gate and lower its position to improve water discharge.

The commissioner further suggested using robotic technology to remove silt from pipelines beneath the main road.

HYDRAA Additional Director Varla Papaiah and officials from the Irrigation Department, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, and GHMC attended the inspection.
