Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) will begin Singur emergency pumping from June 1 to meet rising drinking water demand across the city.
HMWS&SB Managing Director Ashok Reddy directed officials to complete all preparations and ensure uninterrupted water supply. He reviewed the arrangements as groundwater levels continued to decline in several parts of Hyderabad.
The city currently receives around 550 MGD of drinking water for nearly 14 lakh connections across three municipal corporation areas under the CURE limits.
However, many residents now depend heavily on HMWS&SB supply after borewells dried up. Consequently, demand for water tankers has increased sharply in recent weeks.
Officials said Hyderabad received substantial rainfall during April and May last year, easing pressure on water resources.
This year, however, the city has witnessed only limited rainfall. As a result, authorities fear a worsening water shortage.
To address the situation, HMWS&SB decided to draw additional water through Singur emergency pumping.
The highest tanker demand is being reported from Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Gachibowli, Ayyappa Society, Madhapur, Hitec City, SR Nagar, Manikonda and Kukatpally.
Officials said residents are booking nearly 13,000 water tankers every day. They added that the utility is supplying these tankers within 24 hours of booking.
Singur emergency pumping to support city water supply
The water board is making arrangements for emergency pumping operations at the Singur Reservoir.
Officials said the reservoir’s current water level stands at 516.080 feet. The available water storage is estimated at 5.477 TMC.
They plan to begin pumping operations on a partial scale from June 1.
According to officials, the reservoir will still hold around 5.340 TMC of water at the 516-foot level.
Meanwhile, Ashok Reddy reviewed emergency pump-set alignment works under Patancheru Transmission Division-2 along with officials and agency representatives.
He instructed officials to complete pump alignment, power supply and mechanical works on schedule.
Additionally, he stressed the need for coordination among departments to ensure timely commissioning of the emergency pumping system.
The Managing Director directed officials to maintain quality standards and follow safety protocols. He also asked them to resolve technical issues without delay.
