Hyderabad: Himayat Sagar gates were opened on Sunday evening after continuous heavy rainfall in the reservoir’s catchment area increased inflows, prompting authorities to release floodwater into the Musi River.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board opened the floodgates at 6 pm to regulate the reservoir’s water level. Officials said the India Meteorological Department’s latest rainfall forecast and rising inflows necessitated the precautionary release.
Initially, authorities released up to 1,000 cusecs of floodwater into the Musi River. Meanwhile, officials said they were monitoring inflows continuously and would review the situation based on the volume of incoming floodwater.
Further, they said the Water Board could open additional gates or increase the discharge if inflows continued to rise.

Following the release, Water Board Managing Director Ashok Reddy held an emergency review meeting with senior officials. He directed them to ensure that residents living downstream of the reservoir did not face any inconvenience.
The Water Board alerted its field staff and coordinated with the district administrations of Hyderabad and Rangareddy. In addition, authorities mobilised HYDRAA and GHMC teams to monitor vulnerable locations.
Officials also coordinated with the Police Department to facilitate traffic management and shift residents from vulnerable stretches along the Musi River, wherever necessary.
Meanwhile, authorities urged people living in low-lying areas and along the river course to remain alert. They advised residents to avoid venturing outdoors unless absolutely necessary.
