Hyderabad police plan stricter safety measures on ORR

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Police and multiple government agencies are set to implement stricter ORR safety measures to reduce accidents and improve commuter safety on the Outer Ring Road.

A coordination meeting on ORR safety measures took place at the TGICCC under the chairmanship of Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar. Officials from the Transport Department, HMDA, NHAI, GHMC, HGCL and IRB Infra attended the meeting.

Traffic officials from the Cyberabad, Malkajgiri and Future City Commissionerates also participated in the discussions. Initially, IRB representatives gave a presentation on the road safety measures currently being implemented on the ORR.

Sajjanar stressed the need for preventive action instead of responding only after accidents occur. He said authorities should give top priority to road safety on the ORR, which records average daily traffic of nearly 2.80 lakh vehicles.

ORR safety measures focus on accident prevention

The Police Commissioner said five to six accidents were occurring on the ORR every day. He urged all departments to coordinate closely and work towards reducing the number of accidents to zero.

Sajjanar suggested counselling for traffic violators in addition to issuing challans. He also proposed sending safety alerts to commuters through mobile phones when they enter the ORR.

The CP directed officials to reduce emergency response times and consider deploying traffic marshals if required. He further instructed that vehicles should not stop on the ORR except during breakdowns.

According to accident data from the last four months, 33 per cent of accidents occurred due to drowsiness or sleep deprivation. Reckless driving accounted for 25 per cent of accidents, while overspeeding caused 15 per cent. Another 14 per cent of accidents occurred due to tyre bursts.

Sajjanar said extensive awareness campaigns could help prevent many accidents. He also recommended data-driven safety enhancement measures and a safety ranking system for expressways.

Transport Commissioner Ilambarthi said the department was taking several steps to reduce accidents. These include increasing CCTV coverage and implementing recent Supreme Court guidelines.

He said officials were already focusing on vehicle fitness inspections and tyre quality checks. He also proposed mandatory monthly review meetings dedicated exclusively to ORR road safety.

Several senior police, transport and infrastructure officials attended the meeting and reviewed the present safety systems on the ORR.
