Kavitha alleges land grab politics in Pharma City region

Hyderabad: Telangana Rakshana Sena president Kalvakuntla Kavitha accused both the previous BRS government and the current Congress administration of continuing “land grab politics” in the Pharma City region.

Addressing an all-party meeting at the Basheerbagh Press Club on Thursday, Kavitha alleged that the earlier BRS government acquired 13,500 acres from farmers for the Pharma City project. She also claimed that the Congress government now planned to acquire 30,000 acres for the proposed Future City project.

The meeting was organised under the banner of the Anti-Pharma City Struggle Committee and Telangana People’s Joint Action Committee.

Kavitha questioned the government over projected employment generation and the environmental impact of the Pharma City and data centre projects. According to her, pollution levels in the region had increased sharply.

She also alleged that authorities were forcibly acquiring lands belonging to tribal communities while sparing influential landlords. Furthermore, she declared support for affected farmers and tribal groups and said she was ready to join protests to protect their lands.

Land grab politics sparks environmental concerns

Retired High Court judge Justice Chandra Kumar expressed concern over the disappearance of agricultural lands because of industrial projects and real estate expansion.

He said protecting farmlands was essential to avoid future food insecurity. Moreover, he criticised political leaders for failing to fulfil promises made to farmers.

Professor Haragopal alleged that governments were creating conflict between farmers and state authorities in the name of development.

Referring to pollution in the Patancheru industrial belt, he questioned the establishment of polluting industries in fertile agricultural areas. He also accused successive governments of continuing anti-farmer policies despite political changes.

Land grab politics meeting draws party leaders

Several political leaders and activists attended the meeting and extended support to the agitation against the Pharma City project.

Representatives from the CPI, AAP, Dharma Samaj Party and Telangana-based organisations participated in the programme.

Dharm Samaj Party leader Visharadhan Maharaj, VKC Party leader Telangana Shyam and CPI leader Narendra Prasad attended the meeting. Pharma City Anti-Struggle Committee convener Saraswathi Kavula and co-convener Kanneganti Ravi also participated.

AAP leaders Hema, Ushasri and Sabitha, along with several activists, joined the discussion on land acquisition and environmental issues.
