Hyderabad: Hyderabadi biryani ranking entered the global top 10 after TasteAtlas placed it in the 10th position in its 2025 list of the world’s best rice dishes. The guide said the ranking was based on reviews from chefs, food writers, critics and travellers. It also became the only Indian dish in the top 50, which added to its importance.
The guide studied many rice dishes before finalising the chart. As a result, Hyderabadi biryani moved past Lucknow Awadhi biryani, Kolkata biryani and Kashmiri gushtaba rice. Moreover, the recognition highlighted Hyderabad’s 400-year food tradition shaped by Nizam-era culture, Persian and Turkic methods and southern spices. People in the city link the dish to major celebrations, and this ranking strengthened that bond.
Hyderabadi biryani ranking marks India’s lone entry
TasteAtlas said Japanese dishes Negitorodon, sushi and Kaisendon took the top three places. Additionally, Iran’s zereshk polo also appeared in the list. Despite this strong field, Hyderabadi biryani ranking remained India’s only entry. The guide credited its sealed-pot cooking, fragrant saffron and layered masala for the global appeal.
Consequently, the latest placement reinforced Hyderabad’s image as a city known for flavour and technique. It again drew global attention to a dish that reflects a deep culinary legacy.
