Hyderabad: BRS leader and former minister T. Harish Rao accused the Congress government of betraying SC and ST communities by failing to implement promises made under the Chevella Declaration.
Speaking at a dharna organised by the Lambadi Rights Protection Committee at Indira Park on Tuesday, Harish Rao said the protest reflected the self-respect struggle of Lambadi and tribal communities.
He recalled that tribal groups had organised several agitations before Telangana statehood under the slogan “Hamara Tanda Mein Hamara Raj”.
However, he alleged that previous Congress governments led by Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Rosaiah and Kiran Kumar Reddy ignored their demands.
Harish Rao said the previous BRS government under K. Chandrasekhar Rao converted 3,146 tandas into gram panchayats and politically empowered tribal communities.
He accused the Congress government of betraying SC and ST communities after making several promises before elections.
Chevella Declaration promises questioned by Harish Rao
Harish Rao criticised the arrests of Lambadi women and youth protesting against land acquisition.
He alleged that police also detained pregnant women during the protests.
According to him, authorities jailed 45 Lambadi youth for opposing forcible land acquisition.
The former minister claimed the government failed to implement promises made in both the SC/ST Declaration and the Chevella Declaration.
He alleged that Congress promised land rights for podu lands before elections. However, he claimed the government later acquired nearly 50,000 acres of SC and ST lands for industries and corporate projects.
Harish Rao warned that the Lambadi community in Kodangal would politically defeat Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy over tribal land issues.
He also alleged that the government failed to fulfil promises related to student financial assistance, new ITDAs, reservation in contracts and backlog job recruitment.
The BRS leader questioned the Congress government over its promise of providing two lakh government jobs.
He claimed the government admitted in the Assembly that only around 16,000 jobs had been filled so far.
Harish Rao also criticised the government for not increasing housing assistance for SC and ST beneficiaries as promised.
