Tummala reviews urea supply and buffer stock for Kharif 2026

Hyderabad: Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao reviewed urea supply and urea buffer stock requirements for the Kharif 2026 season on Monday.

The minister held a meeting with fertilizer company representatives and Agriculture Department officials at the Secretariat. During the review, he examined fertilizer availability, distribution and awareness on Nano Urea usage ahead of the Kharif season.

Officials informed the minister that the state currently had a urea buffer stock of 1.46 lakh metric tonnes. The state also had nearly 10,000 metric tonnes of DAP and complex fertilizers.

For the Kharif 2026 season, Telangana requested 11.50 lakh metric tonnes of urea from the Centre. However, the Union government allocated only 10 lakh metric tonnes.

According to officials, the Centre allocated 2 lakh metric tonnes each for April, May and June. It allocated 1.50 lakh metric tonnes each for July and August. September received an allocation of 1 lakh metric tonne.

Urea buffer stock target set at 3.50 lakh metric tonnes

Officials informed the minister that only 1.53 lakh metric tonnes reached the state against the April allocation. They said the Centre supplied 48,985 metric tonnes so far in May.

As paddy transplantation was likely to begin in the first week of June, Tummala Nageswara Rao directed officials to maintain a urea buffer stock of at least 3.50 lakh metric tonnes by May-end.

He instructed officials to speed up transportation of pending urea stocks allocated by the Centre. The minister also demanded that 90 percent of the urea produced at the Ramagundam Fertilizer Plant should meet Telangana’s requirements.

Tummala Nageswara Rao said fertilizer produced in Telangana should remain available for local farmers during peak demand periods. He directed officials to write to the Managing Director of the Ramagundam Fertilizer Plant.

The minister warned fertilizer companies against delays in supply and transportation. He also warned wholesale and retail dealers against selling fertilizers above the MRP.

Tummala Nageswara Rao said the Centre would launch a pilot project for a new fertilizer distribution app from May 21. The pilot project will begin in Rangareddy and Medchal districts.

The minister directed officials to intensify awareness programmes on Nano Urea. He also asked companies to participate in the weekly “Rythu Nestham” programme and educate farmers about reducing excessive conventional urea usage.

He appealed to farmers to conduct soil testing and use fertilizers according to soil health requirements. Excessive urea usage could damage soil fertility and reduce future crop productivity, he said.
