Hyderabad: A five-year-old boy died after falling into a water-filled sump at a construction site in Medchal under the Medipally police station limits on Friday.
The victim was identified as Mahesh, son of Jupalli Mahender, a native of Rallapadu village in Kandukur mandal of Ongole district. The family had been living in Satyanarayana Puram Colony in Medipally.
According to police, Mahender and his wife were working as labourers at a house under construction in Dharani Colony. During the day, Mahesh was playing near the site. However, the sump at the construction site had been left open without a lid.
As a result, the child accidentally fell into the water-filled sump and drowned. After some time, family members noticed that Mahesh was missing and began searching for him. Later, they found the boy inside the sump and pulled him out. However, he had already died by then.
The Medchal sump accident triggered grief among the family members, who broke down at the site after learning about the boy’s death.
Medchal sump accident raises safety concerns
Meanwhile, local residents alleged that negligence at the construction site caused the tragedy. They said the builder had failed to implement basic safety measures and had left the sump uncovered.
Residents demanded action against the builder for not securing the construction area properly. They also urged authorities to ensure stricter safety measures at construction sites to prevent similar incidents.
After receiving information, the Medipally police reached the spot, registered a case, and started an investigation into the incident.
