Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 moves ahead as Centre and State appoint SBICAPS

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 moved forward after the Telangana government and the Centre agreed to commission a detailed study on the takeover of Metro Rail Phase I and the proposed expansion project. The decision emerged from meetings between Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Union ministers in New Delhi.

The Centre and the State appointed SBICAPS to assess the valuation of Metro Rail Phase I. Further, the consultant will prepare a report on the proposed expansion project. It will examine borrowing needs for the takeover and identify suitable lending institutions.

Revanth Reddy held talks with Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw over two days. During the discussions, he explained the issues affecting the proposed takeover of Phase I. In addition, he outlined hurdles delaying the launch of the expansion project.

Meanwhile, the discussions continued on Monday night. Revanth Reddy met Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy. Subsequently, the leaders met again on Tuesday morning at Khattar’s residence. During the meeting, they agreed to appoint a consultant.

SBICAPS will conduct a comprehensive assessment of Metro Rail Phase I. The study will cover valuation and financial requirements linked to the takeover proposal. Further, it will examine network expansion, project costs and funding options for Hyderabad Metro Phase 2.

Thereafter, the State and Union governments will decide the next course of action after reviewing the consultant’s report.

The participants also agreed to nominate senior officials from both governments to coordinate the study. Accordingly, the Centre will nominate a senior official. The State nominated the Special Chief Secretary of the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department.

As a result, the two officials will work closely with the consultant. They will coordinate the study and speed up related administrative procedures.
