Telangana conducts disaster management mock drills across the state

Hyderabad: Telangana disaster management mock drills were conducted across the state on Monday to strengthen preparedness for floods, forest fires and industrial accidents.

Revenue, Housing and Information and Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy said protecting lives and property remained the government’s primary responsibility. According to the minister, quick response systems, inter-department coordination and advance preparedness were critical during emergencies.

The minister inspected a large-scale flood mock drill at the HMDA Grounds on Necklace Road in Hyderabad. Senior officials from different departments accompanied him during the exercise.

Speaking at the event, Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy said the first hour after a disaster was crucial. He described it as the “golden hour” for saving lives. Rescue teams, he said, must shift people to safe locations quickly and coordinate emergency services without delay during floods, fires and sudden accidents.

Telangana disaster management mock drills focus on flood rescue response

Referring to the 1908 Hyderabad floods and the recent Godavari and Krishna floods, the minister said history showed the scale of destruction caused by lack of preparedness during disasters.

He called for trained teams, advanced equipment and modern technology to remain ready at all times. The minister also expressed concern over increasing forest fires and urban fire accidents.

Officials said Telangana was studying disaster response measures adopted in different parts of the world. The state, they added, was building a more effective disaster management system.

Special teams demonstrated inflatable life boats, rescue techniques for stranded people and emergency evacuation operations during the mock drill. They also carried out coordinated rescue exercises. Later, the minister visited the Necklace Road Boating Club and reviewed rescue operations.

Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy praised the large-scale conduct of the Telangana disaster management mock drills. He congratulated NDRF, SDRF, the disaster management department and district officials for their participation.

People should not panic because the exercises were only part of advance preparedness measures, the minister said. He also urged media and social media platforms to share only responsible information.

Disaster Management Secretary Dasari Harichandana, Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services DG Vikram Singh Mann, HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath and NDMA Lead Consultant Major General (Retd.) Sudhir Bell attended the programme. Officials from police, fire, revenue, medical and health, GHMC, transport, industries, veterinary and other departments also participated in the drills.v
