Supreme Court stays tree felling near KBR Park flyover project

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed tree felling activities linked to the KBR Park flyover project in Hyderabad and postponed the next hearing to July 27.

The State government had initiated flyover construction activities near KBR Park before the court issued the interim stay order. Consequently, authorities paused the ongoing works following the Supreme Court’s direction.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation proposed the Grade Separator Corridor Project to reduce traffic congestion in Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills.

Officials said the project aimed to balance environmental protection with urban development under the concept of a “Green Hyderabad”.

KBR Park flyover project faces legal hurdle

GHMC officials stated that the project design would protect the eco-sensitive zone surrounding KBR Park. Moreover, they said authorities planned the flyovers and underpasses under a “Zero Park Intrusion” policy.

According to officials, construction activities would remain limited to the existing road medians and avoid encroachment into park land.

GHMC officials also clarified that authorities would not remove any trees from inside KBR Park for the project.

Instead, officials said they planned to relocate trees situated on the central median to other locations through transplantation techniques.

However, the Supreme Court bench comprising Justice B. V. Nagarathna and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan issued the interim stay order on tree felling activities around the park.
