Hyderabad: Hyderabad City Police operationalised the Jogipet detention centre in Sangareddy district to house foreign nationals involved in immigration and criminal violations, following directions from the Telangana government.
Police shifted the facility from Basheerbagh and now run it as a dedicated transit and detention unit. Authorities use it to hold individuals booked in cases related to illegal migration, visa overstay, human trafficking and drug offences.
Since 2018, officials handled 196 foreign detainees through the system. They deported 184 after completing due process. At present, authorities hold 12 individuals in custody, including nine men and three women from Sudan, Nigeria, Uganda and Cameroon, who await deportation.

Officials coordinate deportation procedures with central agencies. They obtain clearances from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs before removal. Teams carry out transfers either by air or through designated international border points under escort.
Senior police officials supervised the setup of the Jogipet detention centre and ensured required infrastructure. The relocation aims to strengthen enforcement and streamline detention procedures.
Meanwhile, the Telangana government approved a permanent transit home at Cherlapally Prison. The plan seeks to improve long-term handling of foreign nationals while ensuring legal compliance and security.
