Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Sunday urged the Centre to include BC caste details in the national census exercise.
The State government said the move would help frame welfare policies for backward communities.
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Mohammed Azharuddin submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Hyderabad.
Protocol Chairman Harkara Venugopal also accompanied the delegation.
The leaders handed over the memorandum before the Prime Minister departed for Gujarat after completing his Hyderabad visit.
Telangana seeks separate provision for BC caste details
Meanwhile, the Telangana government requested the Centre to create a separate provision for Backward Classes data in Column 13 of the household census schedule.
The memorandum stated that the existing census format lacked a dedicated provision for BC caste details.
According to the State government, collecting BC caste details would help authorities ensure social justice.
The government also said the data would improve welfare planning for backward communities.
The delegation urged the Centre to incorporate the provision in the ongoing nationwide census process.
The Telangana government said accurate caste data would support policymaking and strengthen implementation of welfare schemes.
