Hyderabad: Telangana Minister for Prohibition and Excise Jupally Krishna Rao on Monday visited constable Soumya, who is receiving treatment at NIMS Hospital after sustaining injuries while preventing a ganja smuggling attempt.
The Minister personally reviewed her condition, interacted with doctors and family members, and assured them that the State government would fully support her recovery. He also pledged to safeguard her family’s financial stability during this difficult time.
State will cover full treatment expenses, confirms Minister
Calling the incident deeply unfortunate, Jupally said he had immediately recommended shifting Soumya to Hyderabad for advanced medical care. He confirmed that the government would bear all medical expenses. Based on her recovery, she will receive duty assignments suited to her condition. If she is unable to return to active field service, the government will still ensure salary benefits and financial assistance.
Recognising that her family depends on her income, the Minister said the administration has already begun taking measures to prevent any financial hardship. He lauded Soumya’s courage and commitment to stopping narcotics smuggling.
Government accelerates crackdown on attackers and traffickers
Jupally announced that police have arrested two individuals involved in the attack and remanded them to judicial custody. Search operations are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects. He assured that the investigation would proceed swiftly and lead to strict legal action.
Reiterating the government’s zero-tolerance stance on such attacks, he noted that officials working to protect society must not face such threats. He also pointed to intensified anti-drug efforts across Telangana, particularly targeting youth.
So far, the Excise Department has registered 1,354 cases, filed FIRs against 2,457 individuals, and seized 5,196 kg of ganja. In Nizamabad alone, officers booked 70 cases against 110 people.
Given the recurring threats faced by enforcement officers, Jupally revealed that the government is actively considering a proposal to arm Excise staff. He said he would soon discuss this with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and explore appropriate measures.
He concluded by stating that he would personally bring Soumya’s case and her family’s situation to the Chief Minister’s attention. The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to standing by all officers who risk their lives in the fight against drug trafficking.
