Hyderabad: HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath on Friday said authorities were working towards a permanent solution to the Krishna Nagar flood problem ahead of the monsoon season.
He said officials intensified desilting works in flood canals to ensure smooth flow of rainwater from upper areas. According to him, residents of Krishna Nagar face flood threats every year during heavy rains.
Ranganath inspected the ongoing desilting works in Krishna Nagar along with local MLA Naveen Yadav and GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan. Officials conducted a field inspection of the nearly 1.5-kilometre flood canal in the locality.
Speaking to the media, the Commissioner said HYDRAA joined hands with GHMC to carry out desilting works in the nalas. He added that mud flowing from Jubilee Hills and Venkatagiri during heavy rains was accumulating in the canals and creating flood problems.
Krishna Nagar flood problem worsens due to silt accumulation
Meanwhile, Ranganath said the local MLA was also taking steps to construct an alternative flood canal in the area.
The Commissioner said six to seven feet of silt had accumulated in several stretches of the canals. As a result, floodwater was overflowing onto roads during the rainy season.
He explained that officials faced difficulties removing silt from canals located at depths of eight to nine feet. However, authorities would remove slabs wherever necessary to complete the desilting works.
Ranganath said officials identified one or two houses constructed directly over the nala. He added that authorities would take action only if demolition became unavoidable.
According to him, officials would first issue notices and provide sufficient time to residents before taking any action.
The Commissioner said local residents informed officials that authorities last carried out large-scale desilting works in 2021. He recalled that HYDRAA emergency teams removed significant quantities of silt during the previous monsoon season. However, they could not complete the works fully at that time.
Therefore, officials decided to begin the works during summer and complete them before the onset of monsoon rains. Ranganath also said authorities would install strong grills over canal sections where slabs are removed to prevent accidents.
HYDRAA Additional Director Varla Papayya, along with officials from HYDRAA, GHMC and the Water Board, also inspected the desilting works in Krishna Nagar.
