Goshamahal Police arrest trader over expired chewing tobacco stock

Hyderabad: Goshamahal Police arrested a trader for allegedly storing and selling expired chewing tobacco products in Jummerath Bazar. Officers seized around 100 boxes of “Elvee Special Chewing Tobacco” during a routine inspection drive on April 30.

Police conducted checks near Madiga Bandhu Function Hall on Jummerath Bazar Road at around 12.30 pm. During the operation, officers inspected a trader selling grocery items along with tobacco products.

Investigators found that several packets lacked expiry dates, manufacturing details and valid barcodes. Police also detected packets linked to a 2023 batch. Officers said the stock posed a possible threat to public health.

Police said the accused bought the tobacco products in bulk from Malakpet at cheaper rates. He allegedly intended to sell them in weekly markets for profit.

Expired chewing tobacco packets seized during inspection

Police identified the accused as Mohammed Firoz Ali, 35, a resident of Kumraki Gumbad in Ziaguda. He is the son of Mohammed Hamza Ali.

SI L. Narasimha registered Crime No. 152/2026 under Sections 125, 274 and 318 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The charges relate to public safety violations, adulteration of products intended for sale and fraudulent business practices.

Police seized the tobacco stock worth around Rs. 10,000 during the operation. Officers took the accused into custody and secured the seized material for further legal proceedings. Police said surveillance would continue against traders selling expired and substandard products in the city.
