Hyderabad: The Telangana Prisons Department launched a Jail Museum at the State Institute of Correctional Administration in Chanchalguda to showcase the evolution of prison systems and inmate life.
With the new facility, Telangana became home to India’s fifth Jail Museum after museums in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Goa.
Earlier, the department maintained a museum at Sangareddy, but the structure collapsed a few years ago. Later, DG Prisons Soumya Mishra revived the concept and expanded it with support from senior prison officials.
Authorities shifted the earlier exhibits to SICA, Chanchalguda. Subsequently, officials developed them into a modern museum with structured displays and galleries.
Jail Museum showcases prison history and reforms
The museum displays historic prison artefacts, recreated jail cells, shackles, chains and prison industry models. It also highlights rehabilitation and correctional initiatives introduced by the Telangana Prisons Department.
In addition, displays on prison industries, agriculture and skill development programmes explain the department’s focus on inmate reformation and rehabilitation.
Audio and video galleries provide information on prison administration, inmate visits, court productions and routine jail activities. As a result, visitors can better understand prison functioning.
Meanwhile, a major attraction at the Jail Museum is the “One Day Jail Experience” under the “Feel the Jail” concept. Visitors can experience prison food, living conditions and daily prison routines through the programme.
The museum opened to the public on April 28, 2026, at SICA in Chanchalguda.
