Telangana releases 91 life convicts under special remission scheme

Hyderabad: The Telangana Prisons and Correctional Services Department released 91 life convicts under a special remission scheme approved by the state government and extended rehabilitation support to help them reintegrate into society.

The released prisoners included 85 men and six women who qualified for remission under government guidelines.

Officials said the initiative aimed to ensure a smooth transition into society through employment opportunities, self-employment assistance and rehabilitation measures.

Director General of Prisons Dr. Soumya Mishra said the programme represented a new beginning based on responsibility, dignity and hope rather than merely a release from prison.

Special remission scheme focuses on rehabilitation

Of the 91 released convicts, the department provided jobs to 38 individuals at fuel outlets operated by the Telangana Prisons Department.

Officials said these placements would help them secure immediate livelihoods and rebuild their lives after release.

Meanwhile, 53 released prisoners expressed interest in self-employment, agriculture, family businesses and other independent occupations.

The department said their choices reflected a commitment to rebuilding their lives through lawful and productive means.

To strengthen women’s rehabilitation, authorities provided sewing machines to four women convicts under a self-employment assistance programme funded through the Prison Development Fund.

Officials said the support would help them establish sustainable livelihoods and achieve financial independence.

Special remission scheme supports second chances

Dr. Soumya Mishra said the released prisoners earned the opportunity through good conduct, discipline and commitment to reform during their imprisonment.

She urged them to utilise the second chance responsibly, maintain strong family ties and become productive citizens.

The Director General said prisons should serve as centres for reform, skill development and rehabilitation rather than merely places of punishment.

She added that post-release assistance remains essential for successful social reintegration.

According to prison officials, the department continues to implement education programmes, vocational training, counselling services and welfare initiatives to support prisoner rehabilitation.

Dr. Soumya Mishra also thanked Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for their continued support for prison reforms and rehabilitation initiatives.

Senior prison officials, family members of released prisoners, media representatives and members of the public attended the programme and extended support to those beginning a new chapter in their lives.
