Muslim organisations seek greater representation in Telangana Cabinet

Hyderabad: Leading Muslim organisations on Friday urged the Congress high command and the Telangana government to increase Muslim representation Telangana in the State Cabinet, MLC nominations, Rajya Sabha seats and other nominated positions.

Addressing a press conference at Hussami Manzil in Hyderabad, Maulana Md Hussamuddin Sani Jafar Pasha, Ameer of Amarat-e-Millat-e-Islamia Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, released a letter addressed to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.

The representation sought the induction of at least one more Muslim minister in the Telangana Cabinet, nomination of a Muslim leader as an MLC and a greater share in Rajya Sabha and other nominated posts.

Muslim representation Telangana issue raised with Congress leadership

Maulana Jafar Pasha said Muslims constitute nearly 14 percent of Telangana’s population and had supported the Congress with expectations of development and participation in governance.

He noted that the 16-member Cabinet currently includes one Muslim minister, Mohammad Azharuddin, who entered the Cabinet through the MLC route in October 2025.

According to the representation, Muslim participation in government remained below expectations despite the community’s electoral support for the Congress.

The letter stated that Muslims continued to support the Congress because of its commitment to secularism, social justice, constitutional values and minority welfare.

It also highlighted the composition of the Cabinet and argued that communities with smaller population shares enjoyed greater representation in government.

Muslim representation Telangana demand extends to nominated posts

Maulana Jafar Pasha said the issue extended beyond Cabinet berths and included chairmanships, nominated positions and other posts of authority.

He argued that Muslims should receive a fair share in governance and decision-making structures.

Responding to questions about possible Cabinet aspirants, he declined to endorse any individual leader. However, he said the government should accommodate more Muslim representatives.

The representation also rejected the argument that the absence of elected Muslim legislators limited opportunities for representation.

It stated that political parties should strengthen Muslim leadership, improve candidate selection and create conditions that enable Muslim candidates to succeed electorally.

The letter compared Telangana with other Congress-ruled states and pointed to examples of higher Muslim representation in Karnataka and Kerala.

Muslim representation Telangana linked to social justice

Referring to Rahul Gandhi’s slogan of “jitni aabadi utna haq”, the representation argued that Muslims deserved representation proportionate to their population.

The letter stated that Muslims should not be viewed merely as a vote bank but as equal stakeholders in governance and policy-making.

Maulana Jafar Pasha also urged Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to distribute responsibilities more broadly instead of concentrating multiple positions among a limited group of leaders.

During the press conference, he also appealed to Muslims across Telangana to remain vigilant during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

He advised citizens to prepare the required documents in advance and cooperate with Booth Level Officers during the verification process.

According to him, timely completion of documentation would help avoid future complications and ensure accurate voter records.
