Hyderabad: Chikkadpally Police and the Commissioner’s Task Force arrested 10 accused in a kidnapping for ransom case involving a jewellery businessman. The gang allegedly extorted Rs 1.30 crore from his family.
Police recovered Rs 1.07 crore in cash, 118.26 grams of gold ornaments, five vehicles and nine mobile phones. Meanwhile, two other accused remained absconding. The case involved K. Srinivas Rao, 53, who disappeared on October 5, 2026, while travelling to his jewellery shop in Ramanthapur.
Following a complaint from his brother-in-law, Chikkadpally Police registered a missing-person case and began investigating his disappearance. Investigators subsequently established that the businessman had allegedly been abducted near Golnaka Flyover.
According to police, the kidnappers blindfolded Srinivas Rao and confined him at an undisclosed location. The gang initially demanded Rs 15 crore from his family. However, the accused eventually collected Rs 1.30 crore before releasing him.
Real estate dispute linked to kidnapping for ransom
Police attributed the kidnapping for ransom to an alleged dispute involving a real estate venture at Hemanagar in Boduppal. Investigators identified Dumavath Srikanth, listed as accused A-1, as the alleged mastermind behind the operation.
According to police, Srikanth conspired with Gunjapogu Suresh, also known as Surya, and Srinivas Reddy in August 2026. The three allegedly planned to abduct the businessman and obtain money from his family.
Investigators said the gang impersonated police personnel while carrying out the kidnapping. Additionally, the accused allegedly used vehicles displaying fake registration plates and repeatedly switched vehicles to avoid detection.
Police examined these methods while tracing the suspects and investigating their movements. Police said several arrested suspects had previous criminal records involving cheating, theft, robbery, extortion and kidnapping for ransom.
Srikanth was reportedly linked to 16 cheating cases connected with an offer involving the construction of flats. Similarly, investigators said Suresh had allegedly participated in several property offences and other serious crimes.
Two accused, including Srinivas Reddy, identified as A-3, remained at large. Police continued searching for the absconding suspects and investigating the remaining ransom amount.
Cash, gold and five vehicles seized
During the operation, investigators recovered Rs 1.07 crore in cash from the accused. They also seized gold ornaments weighing approximately 118.26 grams and nine mobile phones.
The five recovered vehicles included a Mahindra Bolero, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Kia Seltos. Additionally, police seized a Pulsar 220 motorcycle and a Suzuki Access scooter.
The arrests and seizures resulted from a coordinated operation involving Chikkadpally Police and the Commissioner’s Task Force, Secunderabad Zone. Secunderabad Zone DCP Rakshitha Krishna Murthy and Task Force DCP Vaibhav Gaikwad supervised the operation.
Additional DCP J. Narasaiah and Chikkadpally ACP G. Ranaveer Reddy also oversaw the investigation and enforcement action. Chikkadpally Station House Officer L. Madhu Babu and Task Force Inspector Rajashekar led the teams involved.
