Hyderabad: Former MLC and Jagruti president Kalvakuntla Kavitha has demanded ₹25,000 per acre as immediate compensation for farmers affected by Nizam Sagar backwaters and heavy rains in villages along the Manjeera River.
She visited flood-hit farmers in Nagireddypet mandal on Thursday. Speaking to the media, she said damaged transformers and broken electric poles had disrupted power supply during the monsoon, affecting two crop cycles. Kavitha urged the Congress government to resolve the power issues swiftly to protect ongoing cultivation.
The Jagruti leader also criticised the delay in paddy procurement. She noted that IKP centres and cooperative societies had failed to provide timely transport. As a result, harvested paddy has remained uncollected for over a month. Millers and lorry shortages, she added, are making the situation worse for farmers.
She demanded the government start procurement immediately through official centres and credit payments to farmers’ accounts within 24 hours.
On land-related concerns, Kavitha said 1,500 to 3,000 farmers in Nagireddypet mandal have not received passbooks for Lavani pattas and assigned lands. She accused the Congress government of denying crop loans and procurement to farmers cultivating on such lands. The administration must issue new passbooks without delay, she said.
Kavitha proposed establishing a Seed Research Centre on 800 acres at Survey No. 834 near the agricultural road in Mall Tummeda village. She said this would create self-employment for local youth. She also called for new rice mills, food processing units, and agriculture-linked industries in the mandal to support farmers and provide local jobs.
Jagruti leaders Sampath Goud, Bagareddy, Charan, and Padma also attended the event.
