Hyderabad: Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar called for public support to curb the Hyderabad mosquito menace as the GHMC stepped up preventive measures against mosquito-borne diseases.
The GHMC Entomology Department will conduct a special monsoon drive from August 11 to 21. As part of the campaign, the department has intensified awareness and mosquito-control activities across the city.
Ponnam launched an Information, Education and Communication (IEC) programme on mosquito-control measures at the Minister’s Quarters on Saturday. Entomology officials briefed him on the awareness initiatives planned for residents.
The Minister also inspected equipment used in mosquito-control operations. During the inspection, he enquired about the equipment’s functioning, usage and effectiveness.
The GHMC has been conducting door-to-door awareness programmes. Officials are educating residents on cleanliness in and around their homes to protect public health.
Hyderabad mosquito menace prompts focus on stagnant water
Ponnam urged citizens to take personal responsibility for keeping their homes and surroundings clean. In particular, he asked residents to participate in the ‘Friday-Dry Day’ programme every Friday.
Residents should remove stagnant water from their premises and surrounding areas. This will help prevent mosquito breeding and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
The Minister said the government was taking preventive measures against diseases such as dengue. He also urged people to cooperate with authorities by ensuring that water does not stagnate around their homes.
Ponnam stressed that government measures alone could not keep Hyderabad healthy. Instead, active public participation remained essential to control mosquito breeding and prevent disease.
He asked residents to follow GHMC guidelines and support mosquito-control measures. Meanwhile, the Minister urged citizens to participate actively in efforts to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.
