Hyderabad: BRS MLC Sravan Kumar Dasoju demanded a ₹20,000 crore Telangana drought relief package and accused the Congress government of failing to prepare for the El Niño-induced drought threat.
In an open letter to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Sravan raised 23 questions about drought preparedness, irrigation, drinking water and electricity management. He also questioned the Cabinet sub-committee constituted under GO 1523, headed by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka.
Sravan described the committee’s formation as a delayed exercise aimed at diverting public attention. Moreover, he demanded written, data-backed answers to his questions before its first meeting.
Telangana drought relief package sought amid rainfall concerns
Sravan alleged that the government had ignored warnings about deficient rainfall for nearly six months. He cited alerts from the India Meteorological Department and concerns raised by agricultural and water experts.
Meanwhile, he pointed to wilting crops and declining reservoir levels as signs of the worsening situation. He questioned why the government had constituted a committee without setting a deadline or allocating dedicated emergency funds.
Furthermore, Sravan accused the government of failing to use more than 1,000 TMC of Pranahita floodwater. He alleged that political opposition to former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao and the Kaleshwaram project had influenced its decisions.
According to Sravan, temporary arrangements to divert the floodwater could have supported farmers in North Telangana. Instead, he claimed, the water had flowed downstream without benefiting agricultural fields.
BRS questions electricity purchases and drinking water arrangements
Sravan also criticised the government’s electricity demand forecasting and power procurement decisions. He alleged that inadequate planning had forced the government to purchase electricity from the open market at ₹9.41 per unit.
Consequently, he claimed, the government had spent ₹42.92 crore on power purchases in a single day. He also raised concerns about electricity shortages affecting agricultural pump sets and a reported coal shortage at Yadadri Thermal Power Station.
On drinking water, Sravan cited water deficits in the Krishna and Godavari river basins. He argued that the government’s allocation of ₹1 crore per district for emergency drinking water arrangements was insufficient.
Telangana drought relief package among five key demands
Sravan demanded amendments to GO 1523, including a 15-day deadline for the Cabinet sub-committee’s initial report and emergency funding. He also called for special sessions of the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council to discuss the drought situation.
Additionally, he demanded a ₹20,000 crore supplementary budget for drought relief without waiting for financial assistance from the Central government. His fourth demand concerned a government white paper detailing drought mitigation expenditure, Godavari water flows and electricity purchases.
He further sought immediate per-acre compensation for affected farmers, including tenant cultivators. Sravan also demanded free alternative seed kits for farmers advised against cultivating paddy during the Rabi season. He sought assurances on minimum support prices for alternative crops.
Meanwhile, he questioned why the government had not officially notified drought-affected mandals despite the reported agricultural distress. “Rainfall may be in the hands of nature, but operating pumps, securing power grids, safeguarding reservoirs and standing by farmers are in the hands of the government”, Sravan remarked.
He accused the Congress government of administrative negligence and demanded immediate action to address the situation. Sravan urged the Chief Minister and the Cabinet sub-committee to respond to all 23 questions in his open letter. He also called for time-bound measures to protect farmers, maintain irrigation facilities and ensure drinking water security across Telangana.
