Hyderabad: Telangana Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s silent revolution was gaining momentum across India as public support for the Congress increased.
Addressing the annual Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Yatra Commemoration Day and Rajiv Sadbhavana Award function at Charminar on Monday, he said people increasingly sought an alternative to the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Uttam expressed confidence that the growing support for Rahul Gandhi reflected a wider desire for political change. He also urged Congress workers to strengthen secularism, democracy and national unity.
The annual programme, organised since 1990, commemorated former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s contributions to communal harmony, national integration, technological advancement and youth empowerment.
Uttam credits Congress workers amid Rahul Gandhi’s silent revolution
Uttam called for greater recognition of grassroots Congress workers who had faced hardships during the previous BRS government in Telangana. He said their sacrifices and sustained efforts had played an important role in bringing the Congress back to power in the state.
Moreover, he urged ministers and elected representatives to participate actively in party programmes and maintain closer coordination with the organisation. The Minister stressed the importance of recognising party workers who had continued their political activities despite difficulties during the previous administration.
Meanwhile, AICC secretary in charge of Telangana Sachin M. Sawant paid tributes to Rajiv Gandhi and recalled his contributions to India’s development. Sawant highlighted the former Prime Minister’s role in promoting information technology, strengthening Panchayati Raj institutions and increasing women’s participation in local governance.
He also recalled Rajiv Gandhi’s initiatives to empower young people, particularly his decision to reduce the voting age from 21 to 18. Additionally, Sawant referred to Rajiv Gandhi’s peace initiatives in Punjab, Assam and Mizoram.
Congress leaders call for communal harmony and national unity
Sawant expressed concern over growing caste and religious divisions in the country. He urged Congress workers to support Rahul Gandhi’s efforts to counter hatred and promote social harmony.
The AICC leader also emphasised the importance of protecting secular values and strengthening national integration. During the programme, Dr. C. Mallikarjuna received the Rajiv Sadbhavana Award in recognition of his service to society.
Dr. Mallikarjuna was the founder, managing director and chief consultant urologist of the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology in Hyderabad. Meanwhile, several senior Congress leaders participated in the annual commemoration at Charminar.
Those present included TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud, former PCC president V. Hanumantha Rao and former minister Geeta Reddy. MP Anil Kumar Yadav, senior Congress leaders Anjan Kumar Yadav and Feroz Khan, and other party representatives also attended.
