BRS demands probe into alleged torture of journalists in Telangana

Hyderabad: BRS leader RS Praveen Kumar demanded an impartial investigation into the alleged torture of journalists by Telangana police in Rajanna Sircilla district. He accused police personnel of assaulting two Ek Dham News reporters and registering illegal cases against them under Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s government.

Praveen Kumar alleged that police targeted the reporters after they covered police interference in land disputes in Gambhiraopet mandal. He further claimed that the journalists faced third-degree torture and an attempt on their lives.

The BRS leader said the affected journalists had approached the Karimnagar Police Commissioner with a complaint. However, police had not registered an FIR against the accused personnel.

BRS questions police inaction over torture of journalists

Praveen Kumar questioned why Director General of Police CV Anand had not intervened despite the serious allegations. He accused the police of violating Supreme Court guidelines governing arrests and detention procedures, particularly those established in the DK Basu case.

The BRS leader also questioned the alleged failure to initiate criminal proceedings against the police personnel named in the complaint. He said Ek Dham News had covered public issues for the past decade. Therefore, he demanded that investigators identify who had instructed the sub-inspector to attack the two reporters.

Praveen Kumar insisted that the allegations required an independent investigation to establish accountability. He suggested transferring the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) or establishing a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

He also demanded strict action against those found responsible for the alleged assault and torture of journalists. Praveen Kumar warned that the BRS would continue its fight until the affected journalists received justice.
