Fake number plates: Hyderabad Traffic Police seize 100 vehicles

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Traffic Police seized 100 vehicles and registered 100 criminal cases involving fake number plates and altered registration details over eight months. The seized vehicles included 88 two-wheelers and 12 four-wheelers. Police took action against motorists using forged, tampered or unauthorised registration plates.

The department conducted the special enforcement drive to prevent the misuse of vehicle registration numbers and strengthen road safety. Officials said the violations included fake registration numbers, altered digits and modifications that concealed the genuine identity of vehicles.

Police also warned that such practices could obstruct criminal investigations and allow offenders to escape legal accountability. Hyderabad Traffic Police said the use of fake number plates posed a serious challenge to traffic enforcement and public safety.

According to officials, motorists who concealed or altered their registration numbers could evade identification during traffic violations. Moreover, forged registration plates could make it difficult for investigators to trace vehicles involved in unlawful activities.

The department said its enforcement teams had identified vehicles displaying false registration details or plates that failed to meet prescribed standards. Consequently, police registered criminal cases against violators and seized the vehicles involved.

Officials stressed that vehicle registration numbers must remain genuine, clearly visible and easily identifiable. They also cautioned motorists against using decorative lettering, unauthorised fonts or alterations that distorted registration numbers.

Police warn of action under Motor Vehicles Act

The department reiterated that vehicle owners must comply with the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. These regulations included applicable requirements for High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP).

Police said motorists must not change registration digits, display fabricated numbers or make modifications that obscured the original registration details. Furthermore, officials directed vehicle owners to check their number plates and ensure compliance with prescribed legal standards.

The department warned that fake number plates and other registration violations would attract strict legal action. Hyderabad Traffic Police also announced that special enforcement drives would continue to identify vehicles carrying forged or altered plates.

Meanwhile, officials urged members of the public to report suspected cases of fake or tampered vehicle registration numbers to the police. The department maintained that violations involving vehicle registration plates would not be tolerated and reiterated its commitment to continued enforcement.
