Hyderabad: Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said the recent Delhi developments exposed a widening disconnect between the BJP-led Central government and the aspirations of young people. He said democratic engagement, rather than repression, was the only way to address students’ concerns.
In a statement on Thursday, Uttam Kumar Reddy said lakhs of students were demanding transparency, accountability and fairness in public examinations. They were also seeking accountability in governance. However, he alleged that the Centre had chosen confrontation instead of dialogue.
He said the Indian National Congress had consistently supported students, youth and ordinary citizens. According to him, the party backed those seeking justice through peaceful and democratic means.
The Minister praised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for standing with protesting students and young people. He described Rahul Gandhi’s actions as courageous, compassionate and guided by constitutional values.
“Instead of remaining a distant political observer, Rahul Gandhi chose to stand shoulder to shoulder with students and young citizens who feel unheard. His willingness to raise their concerns and defend their democratic rights reflects the kind of politics India needs today—politics based on empathy, accountability and constitutional values,” Uttam Kumar Reddy said.
Delhi developments reflect concerns of students
Further, the Minister said many young people wanted a new political culture. According to him, they preferred honesty over propaganda. They also favoured dialogue over intimidation and public service over divisive politics.
He said the Delhi developments extended beyond a single protest or one political party. They reflected a wider national debate on the future of Indian democracy. He added that democratic institutions became stronger when governments listened to people instead of trying to silence them.
Moreover, Uttam Kumar Reddy said more citizens were looking to Rahul Gandhi as the principal democratic alternative. He said Rahul Gandhi offered a compassionate, inclusive and forward-looking vision for the country.
Expressing confidence in the Congress leadership, Uttam Kumar Reddy said he hoped Rahul Gandhi would lead the party to victory in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. He also said he expected Rahul Gandhi to become the Prime Minister.
