Hyderabad: BJP MP Eatala Rajender demanded a permanent solution to Jawaharnagar dumping yard pollution during his Jan Sankalpa Yatra. He visited Edulabad Pedda Cheruvu, also known as Lakshmi Narayana Cheruvu, in Ghatkesar mandal. Local fishermen complained that waste from the dumping yard had damaged the lake.
They told Rajender that leachate from the dumping yard had polluted the water and wiped out much of the fish population. The damage had also affected their livelihoods.
Rajender alleged that the pollution had harmed nearby communities and livestock. He cited reports of livestock deaths and contamination of wells and borewells. He also raised concerns about kidney ailments, cancer, respiratory disorders and skin diseases among residents.
The BJP MP blamed the state government for failing to resolve the issue. He alleged that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had pursued cases in the National Green Tribunal and the Supreme Court when he was the local MP. However, Rajender said the problem remained unresolved after Revanth Reddy became Chief Minister.
Jawaharnagar dumping yard pollution fuels demand for waste processing
Rajender called for a detailed project report on converting waste into electricity and organic manure. He said a waste-processing system could help address the problems linked to the dumping yard.
He also criticised pollution in the Musi river and questioned the government’s handling of waste management. Rajender demanded concrete action to protect residents and nearby water bodies from pollution.
The BJP leader announced a four-day foot march covering 60 kilometres to press for action. The march would start at Edulabad and end with a large public meeting at Jawaharnagar.
Rajender demanded that dumping yards be shifted 20 to 30 kilometres away from Hyderabad and kept away from residential areas. He warned that the BJP would launch a wider agitation if the authorities failed to address the issue.
Rajender raised the concerns during his Jan Sankalpa Yatra, where he met residents affected by the dumping yard. BJP state and district office-bearers, party leaders, workers and local residents participated in the programme.
