Hyderabad: Telangana Women and Child Welfare Minister Seethakka reviewed Anganwadi services in Meghalaya during an official visit and praised innovative child development initiatives.
Accompanied by senior officials, including Secretary Anita Ramachandran, Director Shruti Ojha, and Joint Director Moti, she visited multiple centres and assessed their functioning.
During the visit, she observed that Anganwadi centres in Meghalaya have evolved beyond nutrition delivery points. Instead, they now function as hubs for integrated child development covering health, nutrition, and early education.
She also noted that play-based learning methods and creative environments have improved children’s engagement in learning.
Anganwadi services Meghalaya highlight 1000 Days Programme and youth role
The minister appreciated the Meghalaya Early Childhood Development Mission, which focuses on children aged 0–6 years through a coordinated approach. In addition, she praised the “1000 Days Programme,” which provides care from pregnancy until a child turns two.
She said the programme effectively addresses malnutrition and supports healthy development. Meanwhile, she highlighted the role of trained youth volunteers who act as community resource persons.
These volunteers visit households and guide parents on nutrition and early learning practices, especially for children aged 6 months to 3 years. According to her, such engagement strengthens community participation.
She emphasised that the first three years are crucial for brain development. Therefore, she appreciated the state’s awareness campaigns targeting parents.
The minister observed that coordination between Anganwadi staff, volunteers, and communities has made the model effective. She added that such integration offers practical lessons for other states.
Referring to suggestions from the Centre, she said Telangana would explore adapting these practices. She noted that the Meghalaya model blends traditional systems with modern approaches.
