Congress seeks extension of Telangana voter revision deadline

Hyderabad: Congress leaders on Tuesday urged the Election Commission of India to extend the deadline for the ongoing Telangana voter revision exercise. They said the process was progressing slowly, particularly in Hyderabad district.

A delegation led by Hyderabad in-charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar met Telangana Chief Electoral Officer C. Sudarshan Reddy. MLCs Addanki Dayakar and Balamuri Venkat, MLAs Sri Ganesh and Naveen Yadav, DCC presidents Deepak John and Motha Rohith, and TPCC Election Commission Coordination Committee Chairman Rajesh joined the delegation.

Ponnam Prabhakar said the voter revision process had progressed slowly across the State. According to him, the delay was more pronounced in Hyderabad’s 15 Assembly constituencies.

The Minister said only about 21 per cent of the exercise had been completed in Hyderabad district. He noted that only 10 days remained and urged the Election Commission to extend the deadline.

Further, Ponnam Prabhakar said Hyderabad has nearly 4,500 polling stations. He added that the exercise in urban areas was not progressing satisfactorily. He suggested involving college students to improve public participation.

Meanwhile, the Minister said the Congress had received complaints that Booth Level Officers were not visiting households regularly. He also alleged that they were not distributing the required forms properly.

However, Ponnam Prabhakar said the State Government had ensured timely payments to Booth Level Officers. He clarified that they were not facing payment-related issues.

The Minister reiterated that the remaining 10 days would not be sufficient to complete the exercise. He suggested that the Election Commission seek support from engineering students, government teachers and the GHMC to speed up the process in Hyderabad.

He also said the Congress had directed its cadre in Hyderabad to actively participate in the voter revision campaign over the next 10 days.
