Congress seeks Gram Sabhas for voter list verification on Independence Day

Hyderabad: The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Election Commission Coordination Committee urged the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) to conduct Gram Sabhas across the state on Independence Day to facilitate voter list verification.

Committee Chairman Pulipati Rajesh Kumar, along with members Gopishetty Raghavender, Wajid Hussain and Kasaba Srinivas, met Chief Electoral Officer C. Sudarshan Reddy on Tuesday. The delegation submitted a representation seeking implementation of voter verification as prescribed in the 2023 Voter List Manual.

Voter list verification through Gram Sabhas

The committee requested the CEO to organise Gram Sabhas on August 15 after the enumeration process concludes on August 10. It also asked Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to read out the draft electoral rolls during the meetings.

According to the committee, the exercise would allow voters to identify discrepancies before the publication of the draft electoral rolls on August 17. It said the process would help detect entries marked as Absent, Shifted, Duplicate and Dead (ASDD) before citizens filed objections.

The TPCC committee also referred to a similar exercise conducted in Jharkhand. It submitted a copy of that state’s circular to the Chief Electoral Officer for consideration. The delegation urged the Election Commission to adopt the proposed process to improve transparency and public participation in the electoral roll verification exercise.
