BRS opposes PACS nominations, seeks elections for cooperative bodies

Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) urged Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla to stop the State government’s reported move to make PACS nominations and instead hold elections for Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS).

A BRS delegation led by Legislative Council Opposition Leader Madhusudhana Chary met the Governor at Lok Bhavan on Saturday. The delegation also submitted a formal representation outlining its objections.

Later, Madhusudhana Chary told reporters that the State government planned to make PACS nominations without following established procedures. He alleged that the move violated cooperative society regulations.

Chary said voters elected PACS chairpersons in 2020 for terms ending in 2025. He alleged that the government extended those terms by six months. He further claimed that the government now wanted to fill positions through nominations instead of elections.

PACS nominations draw criticism from BRS leaders

The BRS leader alleged that the government wanted to favour certain individuals by bypassing elections. Therefore, the delegation asked the Governor to intervene and stop any further action on PACS nominations.

Chary said the Governor assured the delegation that he would obtain legal advice on the issue. He added that the Governor promised appropriate action after examining the matter.

“The State government is breaching regulations. Appointing individuals to PACS without holding elections is not only against the rules but also deeply concerning,” Madhusudhana Chary said.

The opposition party maintained that authorities should conduct elections for cooperative bodies. It argued that PACS nominations would weaken the democratic functioning of those institutions.
