Hyderabad: Urban governance workshop for mayors and chairpersons from the Hyderabad and Warangal regions was held in Hyderabad on Tuesday. Officials stressed the need for visionary leadership and effective urban administration.
The Municipal Administration Department organised the one-day programme under the supervision of the Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration. More than 60 elected representatives attended the event at Mercure Hotel in Hyderabad.
The workshop aimed to strengthen leadership skills among mayors and chairpersons. It also focused on improving decision-making and governance in urban local bodies.
Dr. T.K. Sridevi, IAS, Secretary of Municipal Administration and Director General of NIUM, attended the programme as the chief guest. She congratulated newly elected representatives and encouraged them to make full use of opportunities available through Central and State government schemes.
She said urban local bodies have significant scope to undertake development works through various government programmes. Accordingly, she urged elected representatives to develop a long-term vision and use available resources effectively.
Further, Dr. Sridevi highlighted the importance of following established procedures and maintaining close engagement with citizens. She advised mayors and chairpersons to prioritise development works based on local requirements.
Urban governance workshop focuses on leadership and planning
The senior official also called for a gender-sensitive and people-centric approach in municipal administration. According to her, public representatives should focus on improving services while strengthening the financial sustainability of urban local bodies.
She noted that legal provisions support initiatives aimed at public welfare. Therefore, elected representatives should utilise those provisions to deliver better services and development outcomes.
During the workshop, experts explained the responsibilities, powers and functions of mayors and chairpersons under the Telangana Municipal Act. They also provided detailed guidance on administrative procedures and governance practices.
Senior officials briefed participants on Central and State government schemes, funding mechanisms and implementation strategies. In addition, they discussed various urban development programmes and planning initiatives.
Meanwhile, the participating representatives shared their experiences and exchanged views on municipal governance. The interactions helped improve mutual understanding and encouraged the sharing of best practices.
The participants expressed satisfaction with the programme and said the workshop enhanced their understanding of urban administration. They stated that the sessions would help them discharge their responsibilities more effectively.
Senior officials from the Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration, the Engineering Wing, DTCP and NIUM attended the programme.
