Hyderabad: City Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar honoured an auto driver honoured for stopping a chain snatcher and aiding police action in Hyderabad.
The Commissioner presented a cash reward and a certificate of appreciation to Mohammed Zaher at his office in Banjara Hills on Tuesday. The recognition followed a chain snatching attempt in Begum Bazar.
According to police, the incident occurred on March 4 near Jinsi Chowrah. A woman, Manju Omlata, was on a morning walk with her daughter-in-law.
Auto driver honoured for brave act
At that time, a rowdy-sheeter, Mohammed Sohel from Dabirpura, attempted to snatch her gold chain. During the attempt, the accused lost control of his scooter and fell.
Meanwhile, the victim raised an alarm. Zaher, who was passing by, noticed the incident through his side mirror.
Although he had moved nearly 100 metres ahead, he quickly turned back. He then rammed his auto into the accused’s bike to stop him.
The accused tried to attack Zaher with a stick. However, Zaher resisted and prevented his escape.
Soon after, patrolling police reached the spot and took the accused into custody. Zaher left the scene without seeking any reward.
Police trace and honour auto driver honoured
Later, the victim informed Goshamahal police about the incident. CCTV footage captured the entire sequence.
Subsequently, police traced Zaher using the auto registration number and technical inputs.
Sajjanar said Zaher’s action set an example for society. He said citizens must act responsibly and support police during crimes.
He also urged residents to alert police through Dial 100 during emergencies. Police registered a case at Goshamahal police station and arrested the accused.
Officials said the accused had 16 prior cases in different police stations. Senior officers attended the felicitation programme.
