Thummala seeks faster maize procurement in Telangana

Hyderabad: State Agriculture, Marketing, Cooperation, Handlooms and Textiles Minister Thummala Nageswara Rao on Friday directed officials to speed up maize procurement Telangana operations and prevent inconvenience to farmers.

He reviewed procurement, storage, transport and gunny bag availability during a meeting with senior Agriculture and Marketing Department officials at the Secretariat.

The Minister said the state had already procured 9.57 lakh metric tonnes of maize from farmers across Telangana.

He stated that the Centre had not undertaken procurement. However, the Telangana government launched maize procurement using state funds worth Rs 4,000 crore on the directions of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.

Thummala Nageswara Rao also said the government was ready to procure jowar crops with an allocation of nearly Rs 1,100 crore.

Maize procurement Telangana needs more storage capacity

The Minister said the state required warehouses with a total capacity of 15.07 lakh metric tonnes to store procured maize.

At present, Telangana had storage capacity for only 11.40 lakh metric tonnes.

He said the state urgently required additional storage space for 3.29 lakh metric tonnes.

Thummala Nageswara Rao instructed Marketing Department officials to identify additional warehouses immediately and complete all arrangements.

He also said maize procurement Telangana operations required nearly three crore gunny bags.

According to the Minister, authorities already supplied two crore bags. He directed officials to arrange the remaining one crore bags without delay.

The Minister instructed officials to prevent labour shortages at uploading points in procurement centres.

He also ordered them to ensure immediate weighing and transportation of produce to warehouses.

Thummala Nageswara Rao directed Agriculture and Marketing officials to maintain coordination and avoid delays in crop transportation.

Maize procurement Telangana issue raised with Centre

The Minister said the Telangana government repeatedly requested the Centre to include maize and jowar under the Price Support Scheme.

However, he said the Centre had not responded despite unseasonal rains affecting farmers.

Thummala Nageswara Rao also demanded an increase in the procurement ceiling for bengal gram and sunflower crops under the PSS scheme.

He urged the Centre to raise the existing 25 percent limit to 50 percent immediately.

The Minister said he would again write to the Union Agriculture Minister on the issue.

He also appealed to Union Ministers and Members of Parliament from Telangana to press the Centre to increase procurement limits and include maize and jowar under the PSS scheme.

Thummala Nageswara Rao said ensuring remunerative prices for crops remained the responsibility of the Central government.

He added that the Telangana government was continuing procurement measures to protect farmers’ welfare and prevent hardships.
