Hyderabad: Telangana power demand reached an all-time high of 19,543 MW at 10:41 am on September 9, setting a new record for the state.
Power utilities met the entire demand successfully, demonstrating their preparedness to handle the rising requirement. Demand stood at 15,906 MW on the corresponding day last year.
The latest figure marked a 23% year-on-year increase. The rise reflected higher electricity consumption across domestic, agricultural, commercial and industrial sectors.
The new peak also crossed the previous record of 19,506 MW. The state had recorded that figure on March 27, 2026, only about six months earlier.
Peak demand has increased steadily in recent years. It stood at 15,497 MW in 2022-23 and rose to 15,623 MW in 2023-24. The figure reached 17,162 MW in 2024-25 before touching 19,543 MW on September 9, 2026.
Telangana power demand rises despite weather challenges
Telangana continued meeting the growing requirement despite adverse weather conditions and the impact of El Niño. The state relied on planning, infrastructure development and power system management to maintain supply.
Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka reviewed the power situation with senior Energy Department officials. He directed them to maintain reliable and uninterrupted supply across the state.
Subsequently, Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju led a teleconference with officials to review the situation. Advisor to the Government K. Ramakrishna Rao and Special Chief Secretary Navin Mittal also took part.
Singareni Collieries CMD Buddha Prakash Jyoti attended the meeting. TRANSCO CMD Krishna Bhaskar, GENCO CMD Harish S., RPDCL CMD Musharraf Faruqui, TGSPDCL CMD Jitesh V. Patil and TGNPDCL CMD Varun Reddy also participated.
Senior Energy Department officials joined the teleconference. The officials reviewed arrangements to maintain power supply as demand continued to rise.
Energy Department schedules high-level review
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka will chair a comprehensive Energy Department review meeting on September 10, 2026.
The meeting will examine immediate steps needed to maintain uninterrupted supply. It will also consider medium-term and long-term strategies for meeting the state’s future energy needs.
Energy Department officials have been directed to remain prepared. Field-level officers have also been told to monitor ground conditions and respond promptly.
The directions cover uninterrupted service to consumers and continued support for the state’s domestic, agricultural, commercial and industrial sectors.
