Hyderabad: The International Labour Organisation appreciated the Telangana minimum wage policy and suggested that other states adopt the model, Minister G. Vivek Venkataswamy said on Thursday. He said Telangana had emerged as a role model in implementing minimum wages.
The Labour, Energy and Mines Minister made the statement while replying to questions in the Telangana Assembly. He said the Congress government remained committed to fair wages and greater financial security for workers.
Vivek said the government would not compromise on workers’ welfare. More than 1.10 crore workers were employed across various industries and organisations in Telangana, he told the House.
The revised minimum wages came into effect on June 1, 2026, through Government Order No. 6. The government had constituted a Cabinet sub-committee to decide on the wage revision.
Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu were members of the Cabinet sub-committee. Vivek said the government took the decision after extensive consultations with industries, labour unions and other stakeholders.
Telangana minimum wage compliance to be examined
Vivek alleged that the previous BRS government had not paid adequate attention to minimum wage revisions during its 10 years in office.
“After coming to power, the Congress government prioritised workers’ issues and revised the minimum wages,” he said.
The Minister also responded to concerns about non-implementation of the revised wages in organisations such as NTPC and Singareni. He assured the Assembly that the government would conduct an inquiry into the issue.
Moreover, Vivek said the government would take steps to ensure 100 per cent compliance with the revised wage structure. The government was also considering an increase in wages for Singareni contract workers.
Vivek said the government was favourably considering a special corporation to address issues faced by outsourcing employees. A meeting would be held soon to discuss the proposal, he added.
The Minister also addressed the Sirpur Paper Mill issue during his response in the Assembly. He said the matter remained sub judice. Therefore, the government would take further action after the court delivered its verdict.
