Telangana to lead National Road Safety Month from January 1: Minister Ponnam Prabhakar

Hyderabad: Telangana will take a leading role in the observance of National Road Safety Month from January 1, 2026. State Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said this on Wednesday.

Chairing a Zoom review meeting with Transport Department officials, the Minister directed them to prepare a comprehensive action plan. This plan should have a strong focus on public awareness and community participation during the month-long programme.

Expressing concern over road safety, Ponnam Prabhakar said nearly 20 people were dying every day in road accidents across the State. He stated that the long-term objective was to reduce fatalities to zero through sustained and systematic awareness campaigns.

As part of the initiative, he instructed officials to visit every school and college, from villages to Hyderabad. The aim is to administer road safety pledges and educate students on traffic rules and safe driving practices.

National Road Safety Month to involve students, drivers, public representatives

The Minister suggested involving organisations such as the National Service Scheme, Lions Club and Rotary Club in the campaign. He said certificates of appreciation should be presented to active participants during Republic Day celebrations on January 26.

He also directed Regional Transport Authority officials to ensure the participation of Ministers, MLAs, MLCs, district collectors, police officers, and newly elected sarpanches. Special emphasis, he said, must be placed on involving students, lorry drivers, school bus drivers, ambulance drivers, and doctors.

Ponnam Prabhakar further stressed the inclusion of BC, SC, ST, and Minority welfare schools to ensure broad-based participation. He proposed a wide range of activities, including road safety rallies, walkathons, helmet and seat belt awareness programmes, rangoli, quiz and essay competitions, eye check-up camps, blood donation camps, school bus inspections, pedestrian safety drives, and training workshops.

The Minister also suggested displaying Transport Department floats during Republic Day celebrations to reinforce the road safety message. He directed that district road safety committee meetings be convened under the supervision of respective district collectors.

He instructed officials to document all programmes and submit photographs and visual records to the Transport Department. Transport Commissioner Ilambarthi, Joint Transport Commissioners Chandrasekhar Goud, Ramesh, and Shivalingaiah, along with Deputy Transport Commissioners, Motor Vehicle Inspectors, and Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspectors participated in the meeting.
