Project Shakti launched to empower 60,000 girls with reusable sanitary pads in Telangana

Hyderabad: A ₹2.5-crore initiative, Project Shakti, was launched on Monday to distribute reusable sanitary pads to 60,000 girl students across Telangana. The Rotary Club of Hyderabad East, in collaboration with the State Bank of India and Unipads Foundation, is leading the programme.

Hyderabad District Collector Harichandana Dasari inaugurated the project at Veeranari Chakali Ilamma Women’s University, Koti. She personally handed over 7,000 reusable sanitary pad kits worth ₹35 lakh to university students. Each kit contains three washable pads, designed to last up to 16 months with proper care.

The Collector urged students to become “menstrual independent.” She emphasised that menstrual hygiene must involve dignity, autonomy, and sustainability. Menstrual dependence, she said, often leads to absenteeism, health complications, and social stigma. In contrast, reusable pads offer a cost-effective, body-safe, and eco-friendly alternative.

She also cited a Supreme Court observation affirming that menstrual hygiene falls under the Right to Life as guaranteed by Article 21. Therefore, she said, the State has a responsibility to ensure access to dignified menstrual care.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Surya Dhananjay said access to menstrual hygiene products builds confidence and allows women to pursue education without disruption.

Rotary District Governor Dr. S.V. Ram Prasad drew parallels with Rotary’s past polio eradication campaign. He argued that collective action could similarly transform menstrual health standards.

Rotary Club of Hyderabad East President Govind Putta announced that Project Shakti will reach more than 2,000 schools. He also revealed plans for a ₹45-lakh science lab at the university. Additionally, he highlighted the club’s earlier efforts, including the installation of 360 RO water plants.

Rotarian C.V. Subba Row confirmed that the project spans six districts—Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Warangal, and Peddapalli. It is being carried out in line with Ministry of Women and Child Welfare guidelines and enjoys support from the Telangana government. The initiative is scheduled for completion by March 2026.
