Hyderabad: Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Tuesday said the State government had given top priority to irrigation projects in the Palamuru region. He said the move aimed to address backwardness and recurring drought conditions.
The Minister held a detailed review meeting at the Secretariat on irrigation projects in the erstwhile Mahabubnagar district. MLAs and Ministers from the region attended the meeting.
Ministers Jupally Krishna Rao and Vakiti Srihari participated in the review. Irrigation Secretary E. Sridhar and Engineer-in-Chief General Ramesh Babu also attended.
Palamuru projects priority under government review
Uttam Kumar Reddy assured elected representatives that the government was closely monitoring the progress of Palamuru irrigation projects. Meanwhile, officials were working to remove execution bottlenecks.
The Minister said the government was treating Palamuru projects on par with major schemes such as Devadula, SLBC and Sitarama projects. Therefore, officials were making all-out efforts to complete them quickly.
He said the Congress government aimed to correct the injustice done to the Palamuru region during the previous BRS government’s ten-year rule.
Uttam Kumar Reddy assured MLAs that he would hold another dedicated review meeting within a fortnight. The meeting would reassess priorities and speed up implementation.
Palamuru projects priority includes Jurala works
Highlighting the importance of the Jurala Project, the Minister said severe sedimentation had reduced the reservoir’s storage capacity to below eight TMC.
He said the government had already submitted proposals to the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The proposals sought assistance for the Jurala project under the DRIP programme.
Uttam Kumar Reddy expressed confidence that desiltation under DRIP would improve dam safety, storage capacity and operational efficiency.
The Minister rejected BRS claims that the Palamuru Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project was “90 per cent complete.” Instead, he termed the claim misleading.
He said the project suffered setbacks after the previous government shifted the off-take point from Jurala to the Srisailam reservoir.
Uttam Kumar Reddy said the BRS government called tenders for the distributor network without completing land acquisition for the canal system. As a result, the delay created implementation hurdles.
The Minister directed officials to prepare a comprehensive report on work progress and execution schedules for all ongoing projects in the region.
He also instructed officials to speed up desiltation of minor irrigation tanks. In addition, he asked them to carry out urgent canal repairs and improve water distribution infrastructure before the monsoon.
