Hyderabad: The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) completed 1,000 NIMS robotic surgeries in less than three years. The milestone marked a major achievement in advanced public healthcare and expanded access to robotic-assisted treatment.
The institute said the achievement reflects its focus on innovation, precision and equitable healthcare. Moreover, robotic-assisted procedures have improved surgical precision, reduced blood loss and postoperative pain, shortened hospital stays and accelerated patient recovery.
The Department of Urology performed 590 procedures on patients ranging in age from one year to over 80 years. The surgeries included radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy, robotic renal transplantation and urogynecological procedures. They also included ureteric reimplantation, Boari flap reconstruction, paediatric pyeloplasty and other advanced reconstructive surgeries.
Surgical Gastroenterology completed 248 robotic procedures involving hepatobiliary, pancreatic, colorectal, intestinal and upper gastrointestinal surgeries. Meanwhile, Surgical Oncology carried out 162 robotic procedures for ovarian, uterine, colorectal and other cancers. The department focused on organ-preserving and nerve-sparing techniques.
NIMS robotic surgeries expand affordable healthcare
More than 90% of the NIMS robotic surgeries were performed free of cost under government healthcare schemes, including Aarogyasri and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. As a result, patients received advanced robotic treatment without financial burden.
NIMS said the achievement strengthened its position as one of India’s leading public institutions for robotic-assisted surgery.
Director of NIMS Dr Rahul Devraj, Senior Professor of Urology and Renal Transplantation and Robotic Surgery Coordinator, congratulated the Departments of Urology, Surgical Gastroenterology, Surgical Oncology, Anaesthesiology, Nursing Services, Operation Theatre staff and other supporting departments.
He said the milestone reflected the expertise and dedication of multidisciplinary teams. Furthermore, it reinforced NIMS’ position as a national centre of excellence for minimally invasive robotic surgery.
Dr Rahul Devraj thanked Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha for supporting advanced healthcare services at NIMS. He also expressed gratitude to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for strengthening healthcare infrastructure, which helped the institute achieve the milestone.
NIMS said it would continue advancing robotic-assisted surgery while delivering patient-centred healthcare and setting new benchmarks in surgical excellence.
