HYDRAA recovers 3,325 acres of government land in two years

Hyderabad: HYDRAA land recovery reached 3,325 acres worth ₹1.5 lakh crore during the agency’s first two years of operations. HYDRAA said the HYDRAA land recovery drive reclaimed government land from encroachers and protected key public assets across Hyderabad.

The agency said the recovery drive covered government land, lakes, parks, roads, footpaths, nalas and land reserved for public purposes. It described the operation as one of the largest land recovery exercises since the integration of the erstwhile princely states.

The Telangana government established HYDRAA on July 19, 2024, under the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. The agency said it was created to tackle recurring urban challenges, including floods, summer water shortages and pollution.

HYDRAA said strong administrative support and operational freedom enabled it to act against politically and financially influential encroachers. The agency also said it protected occupied residential houses while conducting recovery operations.

HYDRAA land recovery supports lake restoration

HYDRAA said it has linked lake restoration with urban development to improve people’s quality of life. The agency is developing parks, open gyms, children’s play areas, walking tracks and green spaces around restored lakes. It said the initiative will strengthen environmental conservation and expand urban greenery.

The agency said restored lakes help control floods and recharge groundwater. They also reduce summer water shortages, improve air quality and support biodiversity. HYDRAA said protecting lakes is essential for Hyderabad’s long-term sustainability.

HYDRAA said the government aims to revive Hyderabad’s chain of interconnected lakes to build a flood-resilient city. The agency has already restored six lakes. It is restoring another 14 lakes in the second phase. It is also developing four major lakes under the government’s mini Tank Bund initiative.

The agency is constructing new inlets to divert floodwater into lakes. It is also improving outlets to carry surplus water to downstream lakes. HYDRAA said these measures will strengthen the city’s natural drainage network.

HYDRAA said it restored Bathukamma Kunta at Amberpet after removing encroachments. The project has reduced flooding in nearby localities. The agency also developed Nallacheruvu in Kukatpally as a tourist destination. It restored Bam Rukn-ud-Daula Lake in the Old City. HYDRAA added that work at Thammidikunta has prevented waterlogging around Shilparamam in the IT corridor over the past two years.

According to the agency, the recovered land includes 2,665 acres of government land, 454.11 acres of lake encroachments, 25.37 acres of nala encroachments, 90.39 acres of park encroachments, 62.18 acres of road and footpath encroachments, and 26.38 acres of land reserved for public purposes. HYDRAA said it will preserve these lands for public use, environmental protection and future development.
