Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police arrest 36, refund ₹49 lakh to fraud victims

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police arrested 36 cybercrime suspects across five states during June 2026 and refunded nearly ₹49 lakh to victims of online fraud.

The Cyber Crime Police Station registered 52 FIRs after receiving complaints through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP). Investigators made the arrests in 14 cases involving investment fraud, social media fraud, job scams and matrimonial fraud.

Police said 22 accused were linked to investment fraud, while five faced charges in social media-related offences. Officers also arrested six people in matrimonial fraud cases and three in job scams.

Investigators recovered ₹48.98 lakh during the month and returned the amount to victims. The department released the figures in its monthly performance report.

One major case involved a Hyderabad resident who allegedly lost ₹1.22 crore in a fake institutional stock trading scheme promoted through WhatsApp. Police arrested four accused and seized mobile phones, debit cards, cheque books, SIM cards and bank documents.

Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police intensify online enforcement

The Zonal Cyber Cells processed 2,288 NCRP complaints during June. They registered 287 FIRs, arrested 10 accused in nine cases and facilitated refunds exceeding ₹1.08 crore.

Meanwhile, the Cyber Patrol Enforcement Unit identified 280 fake social media profiles that carried 310 paid advertisements promoting illegal betting, fraudulent investment schemes, child exploitation and multi-level marketing scams. Authorities reported the profiles and secured their removal from social media platforms.

Police said cumulative cyber patrol operations have removed 958 fake social media profiles and 2,517 illegal advertisements. They also registered eight FIRs against those promoting such activities.

The department highlighted the work of the C-MITRA victim assistance initiative, which contacted 1,247 victims and registered 225 Zero FIRs to speed up legal action.

Furthermore, police urged citizens to remain alert against fake investment schemes, phishing links, malicious APK files, WhatsApp profile cloning, matrimonial fraud and so-called digital arrest scams. They advised people to invest only through SEBI-approved platforms, avoid suspicious links, enable two-step verification and immediately report cyber fraud through the national helpline 1930 or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
