Hyderabad: Two migrant workers died after a seven-storey under-construction building collapsed at Anjaiah Nagar in Gachibowli on Saturday afternoon. The Gachibowli building collapse trapped the two workers under debris and also damaged a neighbouring apartment.
Police identified the deceased as Umesh Kare, 34, and Mopat, 42. Both worked as tile workers and came from Madhya Pradesh. The building reportedly stood on a 50-square-yard plot beside a storm-water drain.
It had nearly reached completion when it collapsed at around 1 pm, according to the available details. The falling debris struck an adjacent apartment and partially damaged its walls.
Two elderly residents suffered injuries in the incident. Authorities evacuated residents from the neighbouring building after the collapse. Students staying in a nearby hostel also rushed out in panic.
Gachibowli building collapse triggers rescue operation
Police, Fire Services, SDRF, GHMC and HYDRAA teams launched a rescue operation after the Gachibowli building collapse. The teams searched the debris amid fears that additional workers could remain trapped underneath.
Rescue personnel worked at the site while officials assessed the stability of the surrounding structures. MLA Arekapudi Gandhi visited the location and inspected the rescue operations.
GHMC Commissioner Srujana also inspected the site following the collapse. Officials focused on clearing debris and checking whether any more people remained trapped. The incident also prompted concern among residents living close to the construction site.

Residents allege building norm violations
Local residents alleged that the under-construction structure lacked proper permissions. They also claimed that the construction violated GHMC norms. The allegations raised questions over the quality of construction and compliance with safety standards.
However, authorities had not announced any final finding on the cause of the collapse in the available information. Police reportedly began searching for builder Sajid after the incident.
Investigators were expected to examine the construction approvals and other records connected with the property.
The Gachibowli building collapse also drew attention to the site’s proximity to a storm-water drain. Officials had not yet stated whether that factor contributed to the incident.
Two elderly residents injured
Debris from the collapsed structure fell on an apartment next to the construction site. The impact damaged portions of its walls and injured two elderly residents. Authorities then evacuated occupants as a precaution.
Meanwhile, students from a nearby hostel left their building in panic after hearing and seeing the collapse. Emergency teams continued rescue and inspection work at the site. Police also began examining the circumstances that led to the deaths of the two tile workers.
The incident left Umesh Kare and Mopat dead while raising fresh concerns over construction safety in the area. The investigation into the Gachibowli building collapse also focused on alleged permission violations and the role of the builder.
