Excise constable Soumya dies after ganja smugglers’ attack

Hyderabad: Excise constable Soumya died while undergoing treatment at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences. She died after sustaining critical injuries in an attack by ganja smugglers during an enforcement operation in Nizamabad district, officials said on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Gajula Soumya (23), who was working as a constable in the excise department at the Nizamabad district headquarters. She had been battling for life for eight days. She breathed her last at around 9.45 pm on Saturday while receiving treatment.

Soumya was initially admitted to a private hospital in Nizamabad after the incident. As her condition worsened, doctors shifted her to NIMS in Hyderabad on January 25 for advanced care.

According to officials, the incident occurred on January 23 at Madhavnagar. At that time, Soumya attempted to stop and check a car suspected to be transporting ganja. The occupants of the vehicle allegedly rammed the car into her while trying to escape. This caused grievous injuries.

Following the incident, excise and police officials launched a case against the accused and initiated an investigation into the ganja smuggling network involved. Officials said further legal action would continue despite the death of the constable.

Family members were inconsolable after receiving news of her death. A simple funeral was scheduled to be held at her native village, Mosra, on Sunday, officials said.
