HMWSSB to push treated sewage water use in construction to ease summer shortage

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is preparing a special action plan to promote treated sewage water. The initiative will target construction sites, industries and other non-drinking uses. The board aims to protect drinking water supplies ahead of next summer.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy directed the board to take advance measures. El Niño could reduce rainfall and increase pressure on the Singur and Manjira reservoirs. In response, HMWSSB plans to launch the programme on November 1.

HMWSSB Seeks Support From Construction Sector

Managing Director Ashok Reddy chaired a special meeting at the board’s headquarters on Friday. Representatives from CREDAI, NAREDCO and TBF attended the meeting.

Discussions focused on conserving drinking water over the next eight months. Participants explored ways to regulate groundwater use and redirect treated water from sewage treatment plants (STPs) to construction sites. They also discussed alternative supply systems.

Construction sector representatives pledged to support the board’s conservation efforts. They agreed to work towards the Chief Minister’s water-saving goals.

Treated Water to Reduce Pressure on Drinking Supplies

Ashok Reddy stressed the importance of managing water resources until the next monsoon. He urged construction firms and industries to use treated water wherever possible.

The board also wants parks, green belts and landscaping projects to adopt treated water. This approach could reduce unnecessary demand for drinking water and groundwater.

HMWSSB is preparing implementation guidelines based on treated water availability and quality. Officials are also assessing transportation facilities and supply capacity.

The board will soon issue detailed guidelines and operating procedures. Ashok Reddy asked construction bodies to consult their members and promote treated water use. He also assured them that HMWSSB would maintain prescribed quality standards.

The board plans to take action against suppliers who violate the rules.

Green Water Tanker Platform to Launch Soon

HMWSSB is developing a digital platform called Green Water Tanker to simplify treated water supply. The board expects to launch the platform within seven to 10 days.

Water suppliers, tanker operators, construction firms, industries and other users will be able to register. The platform will match user demand with treated water available at nearby STPs.

It will also consider supply distances and tanker availability. These features aim to improve coordination and make water distribution more efficient.

Users will also be able to book tankers online and track their movement. The board expects these services to improve transparency and simplify access to treated water.

HMWSSB Targets 100 MLD of Treated Water Use

In the first phase, HMWSSB has set a target of 100 million litres per day (MLD) for treated water use. Construction sites, industries, parks and landscaping projects will form the main user groups.

The initiative aims to conserve drinking water supplies while creating a more organised system for distributing treated sewage water.

Executive Director Santhosh, Directors Narayana and Prabhu, and Chief General Managers Padmaja and Sujatha attended the meeting. CREDAI president Jaideep Reddy, NAREDCO vice-president Ashok Swaminathan and TBF representative Prabhakar Rao also participated, alongside other officials and industry representatives.
