Hyderabad: The Telangana Board of Intermediate Education (TGBIE) announced a series of academic reforms along with the commencement of junior college admissions for the 2026-27 academic year. Admissions into junior colleges started from May 12.
The TGBIE issued the admission notification on May 11 and announced several changes in examination and assessment patterns across subjects. The Board released the reforms on May 14.
The Board restructured practical examinations in science subjects into 15 marks each for first and second year students. Earlier, second-year students wrote practical examinations for 30 marks. However, theory examinations will continue for 60 marks. The changes apply to Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology subjects.
TGBIE reforms bring internal assessment changes
The Board introduced Activity-Based Learning (ABL) for internal assessment in Mathematics subjects. Under the new system, Maths-A and Maths-B will carry 15 marks each in first and second year. Meanwhile, the Board will conduct theory examinations for 60 marks. Earlier, colleges conducted only theory examinations for 75 marks without internal assessment.
The Board introduced similar reforms in Humanities subjects, including Commerce, Accountancy, Economics, Political Science, History, Geography and Public Administration. It allotted 20 marks for Activity-Based Learning internal assessment. Consequently, students will write theory examinations for 80 marks instead of 100 marks.
The Board introduced the same pattern for language subjects. In addition, students studying modern languages under Part-II, including Telugu, Hindi, English and Urdu, will have 20 marks for internal assessment and 80 marks for theory examinations.
The TGBIE also introduced a new ACE group consisting of Accountancy, Commerce and Economics subjects. The Board said the group would include 20 marks for Activity-Based Learning internal assessment and 80 marks for theory examinations.
For MEC Mathematics, the Board introduced a separate question paper. The revised pattern also includes 20 marks for internal assessment and 80 marks for theory examinations. Earlier, colleges conducted examinations for 75 marks without internal assessment.
The Board revised first-year Intermediate textbooks for the 2026-27 academic year. Subject expert committees prepared the new textbooks. According to the Board, the books include diagrams, knowledge boxes, QR codes, Indian knowledge systems and simulations wherever applicable.
The TGBIE said it would complete distribution of revised textbooks before June 1. It also said officials were distributing textbooks on time for the benefit of students.
